Fossil Fuels Remain Dominant, Powering 57% of Global Electricity

Despite renewable energy expansion, fossil fuels continue to dominate global electricity generation at 57% of worldwide output.

Multiple energy research organizations have confirmed that fossil fuels maintain their commanding position in the global electricity supply chain. According to analysis by the Pew Research Center drawing on data from Ember, a clean energy research organization, approximately 57% of the world's electricity continues to be generated from coal, natural gas, and oil. The Energy Institute's Statistical Review of World Energy reached similar conclusions, underscoring that hydrocarbon-based power generation remains the backbone of global electrical infrastructure.

While renewable energy sources have expanded their market share in recent years, the transition away from fossil fuels has proceeded more gradually than some climate advocates anticipated. The persistent dominance of coal, gas, and oil reflects both the infrastructure investments already committed to these technologies and the ongoing demand for reliable, dispatchable power in industrial economies worldwide. This reality highlights the scale of the challenge facing policymakers and energy companies seeking to accelerate the shift toward zero-carbon electricity generation.

The findings suggest that even as alternative energy capacity grows, a prolonged period of coexistence between fossil and renewable sources appears likely.
