K-Shaped Economy Widening Divide, Clarida Says

Former Fed Vice Chair Richard Clarida warns the two branches of America's K-shaped economy are diverging more dramatically than ever.

Richard Clarida, former Vice Chairman of the Federal Reserve and now serving as a global economic adviser for Pimco, has underscored concerns about deepening economic inequality in the United States. Speaking on Bloomberg Money, Clarida characterized the American economy as K-shaped, a metaphor that describes two diverging economic trajectories where some segments experience robust growth while others stagnate or decline.

According to Clarida's assessment, this bifurcation has become increasingly pronounced over the past six to seven years, with the two branches of the K moving further apart. The K-shaped recovery model gained prominence following the 2020 pandemic shock, illustrating how different income levels and sectors experienced vastly different outcomes from monetary and fiscal stimulus programs.

The observation from a high-ranking former Fed official highlights persistent structural challenges in the U.S. economy, where wealth concentration and sectoral performance divergences continue to shape employment opportunities, income growth, and asset valuations across different demographic and professional segments.
