New U.S. Battery Lab Advances Grid Storage Technology

A Department of Energy facility launches advanced battery production capabilities that could reshape energy storage economics and safety standards nationwide.

The U.S. Department of Energy has commissioned a new battery production line aimed at accelerating the development of safer, more cost-effective energy storage solutions for the nation's electrical grid. Housed within the Grid Storage Launchpad (GSL), a 93,000-square-foot research facility operated by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington, the initiative represents a significant investment in domestic battery technology advancement.

The production line is equipped with 16 specialized pieces of equipment configured within a 1,400-square-foot laboratory space, enabling researchers to move from conceptual designs to functional prototypes more efficiently. This infrastructure allows scientists to test multiple battery chemistries and configurations simultaneously, accelerating the timeline for breakthrough discoveries in energy storage.
